Don't confuse wireless with wireless
Wireless security systems may communicate over analog phone lines, radio, cellular or the Internet. We normally don’t use Internet at the primary means or only means of communication because we cannot control it like you can cellular and we have battery backup on the cell units and radios.
Security systems with wireless communication that is accomplished via radio or cellular may be hardwired alarm systems or have wireless transmitters such as door contacts, motion detectors and so forth. So wireless is not always referring to the same things when you talk about security systems.
The cellular communicators we use are mounted in or next to your alarm panels and have nothing to do with your cell phone or your cell phone service. Peak Alarm enters into a contract with a cell phone company that provides this system of service and then we bill you for the service.
Here at Peak Alarm we install mostly systems that are monitored using cellular communicators since the communications cannot be disabled by cutting a wire outside the building. This also applies to the AES radio systems that we install although with AES you cannot have the remote arm/disarm features.
Many companies offering phone lines are going to VOIP Voice over IP which may or may not work with your current alarm system. Some alarm systems look for a specific voltage and digital phone lines have a different voltage than analog lines do and often when they tell you that you have an analog line it may not be an actual analog line. Actual analog lines can be wired for line seizure meaning if anyone is talking on the phone and there is an alarm it will cut them off and send the alarm. This was accomplished using an RJ31X block and we would tie to the phone wire right at the DMARC and wire it to the alarm panel and then back to the phone block.
Not all wireless systems are alike, Peak uses DMP equipment which has high security protocols along with frequency hoping and can be encrypted and we also use Qolsys alarm systems which are encrypted. Both of these systems also are on the 900 Mhz frequency meaning they have a longer range and are more secure.
If you want to get rid of your phone lines we can normally add a cellular communicator to your current system although some of the systems have to be updated in order to have the option of arming and disarming your system remotely using your smart phones. This all depends on the age of your security systems.
