Fire Marshals and insurance

Code dictates what is required in specific buildings

Insurance will often require fire alarm systems and often can require additional protection to meet their requirements.

Fire Marshals will interpret code and they also look at specific circumstances and they are concerned for life safety. It is prudent to involve them in the planning phase of your building to make sure they are in the loop.

If a company is just replacing old equipment part for part this can be done on maintenance and normally it is not required to submit plans or submitting or even a permit. When you are adding devices or appliances to a fire alarm system or if there is an occupancy change or large remodel normally a full package and permit are required.

Some examples are the homes in Park City Utah where insurance will often require temperature sensors so if the home drops below a certain temp the central station is notified. Some insurance companies also require water sensors. We also have a system called Watercop which can not only be integrated to detect water flooding but to shut off your water main to protect against flooding. This system is not cheap and you also need to involve a plumber and there are several different configurations so I can help you with that when you are interested.

Some insurance companies also require smoke detectors be tied to a central station and most also require sprinkled buildings to be monitored as well.
