NFPA 72 IFC and local Utah Fire Alarm code R710

IFC International Fire Code is found in the IBC International Building code

IFC tells us when we need a fire alarm depending on different variables such as occupancy type, building type and other factors such as whether the building is fully sprinkled or not sprinkled if it is an educational facility, motel, hotel or other type of building.

NFPA 72 tells us how to install the fire alarm with items such as what the spacing should be, where to use smokes, heats and horn strobes and strobes. NFPA 72 tells us about low frequency horn strobes for sleeping areas etc…

R710 Local Utah code lists any exceptions, one of those exceptions is National Fire code requires the horn strobes to stop the sound and the strobes when the alarm system is silenced. In R710 Utah requires that when the silence button is pushed the horns will stop but the strobes will continue. The rational is that if the strobes are still on the fire department can work without the bother of the horns and the strobes will continue so that people will not enter the building while there is still danger.

NFPA 72 lets you know the mounting heights and spacing with sections for inspection and testing as well as sections on notification appliances and Initiating devices as well as information on mass notification and voice evacuation for certain buildings and areas.
